There are lots of questions and speculation about the eclipse. As the day draws closer, more people have talked about renting out their fields, rooms and houses to visitors. The Idaho State Tax Commission stopped by to ask the City to post the following information which has been in the paper before. If you are thinking of selling or renting during the event make sure you collect and remit the taxes that apply even if you’re selling and renting out for only one day. If you are selling food, t-shirts, souvenirs, etc remember to collect Idaho’s 6% sales tax. If you are renting out your home, vacation home, cabin, trailer, a room in your home, etc. for temporary lodging, you are responsible to collect the 6% sales tax; 2% travel and convention tax; and any other local sales tax that applies. If you are renting out your yard, driveway, parking lot, or other space for overnight camping, you are responsible for the Idaho 6% sales tax; 2% travel; and convention tax; and any other local sales tax that may apply. Weiser has no other taxes so that doesn’t apply locally. The taxes you collect are to be remitted the Idaho State Tax Commission in Boise. With all the attention we are getting, they may well have agents in town to monitor for these taxes. Just a bit of a warning.
Don’t forget the Open House on the West 9th Street project Wednesday, July 26 at the Vendome from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Come and see the plans for the proposed project for the bridge replacement and realignment scheduled to be done in 2019. The City and our engineers are looking for input from the public on the plans.
It has been dangerous year on the Idaho highways this year and we are looking at a August with the Eclipse event and the Labor Day weekend at the end of the summer. This will be the end of the ‘100 deadliest days of driving’ as designated by the Idaho Transportation Department. According to their Office of Highway Safety, “Human behavior is the cause of 94 percent of our crashes.”
According to preliminary reports, there have been 56 reported fatalities on Idaho roads since Memorial Day weekend. The top three identified contributing factors have been aggressive driving, distracted driving and impaired driving. Three small things we can all do to avoid some fatalities are using our seat belts, putting phones away and being more patient. From 2011-2015, reports show almost two thirds of the people who died in Idaho crashes were not wearing their seat belts. Please buckle up when getting in vehicles.
Beginning last Friday, more than fifty state and local law enforcement agencies along with ITD will work to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our roads. Agencies will be conducting additional patrols through August 4 with a focus on aggressive driving, distracted driving and seat belt use. Drive cautiously and be patient.
City Street and Wastewater Departments have completed their work on the replacement of stormwater pipes on W. 4th Street and will be moving to a project along E. 13th Street next. The Water Department will be complete work on service lines on W 4th and W. 3rd over the next couple of weeks. Watch for signage in these areas.
Congratulations to Weiser Memorial Hospital on the completion of the remodel of the Nurses’ Station. This is another nice upgrade to our local hospital and a much needed improvement for our medical community.
