The Mayor’s Corner 08/09/2017

Well, we are a week out from the Eclipse Event beginning. The City department heads have been meeting internally with a representative from the Eclipse committee over the last several weeks to focus our efforts. The City offices will be open and all personnel have been asked to be on duty to help coordinate responses to issues that involve City services. We anticipate that much of the work will happen after the event in cleaning up our community again. If there are any volunteer groups that would like to help with the clean up during the week after, let the City know. We have been informed there is a JV Football game scheduled on our field Thursday night, August 24th so we want to get the field cleaned up quickly. The Street Crew has been working hard to clean around the City before the event but know after the event could be a major task.

The Crews have been working on cleaning up the overpass the last couple of weeks, unfortunately, we have some less then talented individuals that have decided to vandalize the overpass and a few buildings in the area. If you see this occurring or know who has decided to take their frustrations out on us, as a City, please call Crime Stoppers or the Weiser Police Department. We again have a few that want to wreck it for the rest of us.

Speaking of cleaning our streets and community, we have a problem developing regarding yard/garage sales. People are beginning to place boxes and signs advertising on our main streets particularly State Street in the main downtown area. These will be removed. The City has tried to work with residents by allowing some advertisement of yard/sales on sidewalks in some areas as long as they do not block the sidewalks. However, they will not be allowed in the main downtown corridor particularly on State Street from Liberty south to the Deport. Many people work hard and donate to make out downtown business area more appealing and the boxes and signs detract from that effort. Please refrain from placing these advertisements in these areas or the City will have to strictly enforce the sign ordinance.

At the regular meeting of the Weiser City Council on Monday, August 14, the Council will pass a FY 2018 Tentative Budget which will then be advertised in the local paper. A complete tentative budget can be requested from the City Clerk. The Budget Hearing will be held on Monday, August 28 at 7:00 p.m. in Council chambers. At this time, the Council will take input from the public and questions regarding the budget will be addressed. After the tentative budget is passed and advertised the budget cannot be increased without starting the process again but it can be reduced if the Council chooses. A budget must be passed before September 6.

A reminder: packets for City Council positions can be picked up from the City Clerk’s office at any time. Filing begins on Monday, August 28th at 8:00 a.m. and closes on Friday, September 8. The election will be held on Tuesday, November 7. If you have any questions, contact City Clerk, David Tate at 415-1965.

Don’t forget the Farmers’ Market and Craft Fair is now open on Thursdays, from 5-7:30 p.m.. It is scheduled to run until September 14.
