The Mayor’s Corner 04/25/2017

I attended the Weiser Area Chamber of Commerce meeting at Ruszoni’s on Tuesday and was pleased to hear the presentation by the Sunnyside Farm and Events and the Lazy Bear Ranch. Both of these businesses are expanding more into weddings and events. Both venues are great representative of our area and are hoping to bring new visitors into the area to see what we have to enjoy. Good luck on your new ventures.
Another great new venue is the Grotto located in the old gym at the ‘Old Institute’. Dennis and Sandy Cooper are turning this into another music venue with stage, seating and sound. They held their first official event last week and it was a great success with the Acoustic Guitar Concert. The Bee Tree Folk School will also be housed in this location so watch for more activities there particularly this summer.
All three of these businesses would be awesome places for business meetings and retreats. The owners are willing to work with corporations to meet their needs and through their efforts more people will come to know about our community. Check out their Facebook pages for more information.
City crews continue to work on improvements on our infrastructure with the weather cooperating this week. WWTP crew is working on Flintlock to upgrade the pipe in this area prior to the W. 9th Street Project beginning. We appreciate the patience of residents in this area.
The Water Department is working on raising meter lids that have dropped to avoid accidents. If you are aware of a lid that needs leveled and we miss it, give us a call. They are also working on Indianhead Road to get started on their upgrades for W. 9th Street Project.
Update on the Ridley’s Store Project: the City Engineers indicated this morning (Monday) that they would have their review completed by Tuesday. A technical review committee meeting is planned before the end of this week. From that meeting Ridley’s will be given any needed changes to the plans so they can make the changes and proceed to put the project out for bid to begin site and foundation work while working on the ITD traffic study. We’ll try to keep you informed of the progress we know about.
The Weiser Rec Department is busy with soccer and getting equipment out for baseball this week. They will be closed Friday so coaches can pick up equipment in the main office that day. It has definitely been baseball weather and I know some kids are getting excited. Parks are ready for the activity along with the finishing of the soccer season. Watering and mowing will begin right away and the work of the Senior Class volunteers have spruced up so we’re ready to go.
Our sympathy goes out to the family of Marshall Dickerson on his passing. Marshall served our community as a City Councilman for 17 years and stepped into the Mayor’s chair to finish out a term. He always had quips and advice for me after I came into office. What a jokester. Co-workers and friends told some great stories about Marshall as a game player and funeral director. He served our community well. Thank you to Betty, Mike and family for supporting Marshall’s service to the Weiser area.
