The Mayor’s Corner 06/27/18

Mayor Diana Thomas

Summer is officially here and another Fiddle Week is in the books. Thank you to the many volunteers around town who help each year to put on this fun event. To Cindy and Bruce Campbell and their many helpers, thank you for the many hours you put in during this week and throughout the year to bring the visitors to our community. Yes, the festival and contest have changed over the years just as society and we have changed. I don’t find myself doing the same things I did twenty years ago and don’t enjoy or appreciate the same things so I have to expect changes in the Fiddle Week as well.
Thank you to Sandy Copper and the Board who try to help the week evolve to provide entertainment for many. The Fiddle folks are always looking for volunteers and ideas. If you would like to get involved contact Sandy at the Fiddle offices in Slocum Hall.
I also want to thank Nick Reed and his crew of volunteers for the work they did to put on the Weiser River Music Festival. New ideas, bring new people to our area. I was spending time with family so did not have the opportunity to attend the festival so am glad to hear, WRMF will be back next year. It sounded like a fun time for those who attended. Watch for news about the festival next year.
City crews have begun the cleanup after Fiddle Week. Fiddles will come down and the banners will change. 4th of July banner will be going up and preparations for the 4th of July Veterans’ march will continue. Remember the march will begin at the Depot and move down State Street to Veterans’ Park where a ceremony will take place. Family and friends are encouraged to join the veterans on bikes and walking to honor our veterans. There will be a float for veterans to ride on if they are not able to march. The march gathering will begin at 10:30 am and start down the street at 11:00 am.
At this time, I ask all current and retired military personnel to appear on July 4, 2018 at the Weiser Depot to muster for the annual Fourth of July Veterans’ March. Troops are commanded to report at 10:30 a.m. in service dress, if possible, for preparation to march up State Street to Veterans’ Park for the flag ceremony.
Over the next week the City Fire Department will begin their preparations for the fireworks display to be held 4th of July night after dark usually around 10:30. Thanks to the donations from many in and outside the community, the department is planning another outstanding display. The week, they will be testing some of the equipment at the soccer complex.
Fireworks are currently being sold in the City limits. Please be respectful of veterans and animals when setting off legal fireworks. Even the legal displays can be unsettling to our veterans and furry friends as well as many children.
Street department is continuing the alley cleanup and grading on the east side of town beginning later this week. The Water Department will return to work on the W. 9th Street project and replacing a hydrant on E. 4th and Liberty Streets. Wastewater Department will begin their work on W. 9th beginning at Pioneer Road next week.
No news from the Ridley’s front. The City is still waiting for the revised plans to be deliver to our engineer and for us to receive the final information. The City has not heard directly from Mr. Ridley as yet. I know we’re all expecting word any day.
The City of Weiser sends our sympathy and prayers to the family of former employee, Bill Pierson, who passed away this past weekend. Bill retired a short-time ago from our Water Department and he is missed.
