Fourth of July is here. Yay, Happy Birthday, America. Remember the Veterans’ March on Wednesday. Line up begins at 10:30 and march down State Street starts at 11:00 am. Following the march to Veterans’ Park, a short program honoring our veterans and our flag will occur. There will be a float for veterans to ride on if they choose. Please come and support our veterans and current service people and enjoy our country’s birthday.
Weiser Volunteer Fire Department will have a fireworks display set off on the Cemetery property adjacent to State Street. The display should begin about 10:30. Please remember if you are parking on Weiser High School property, the Rolling Hills Golf Course or other public and private property to respect where you are and pick up any trash. Safe and Sane fireworks only are legal in the City of Weiser. Respect our veterans and furry friends when enjoying the evening. Just a note: there will be fireworks, but if the wind becomes an issue, some of the large and higher displays may have to be postponed. Prayer for a calm night.
When driving home from meetings last week, I noticed a real danger along Highway 95. The new road surface between Payette and Weiser is a nice improvement and having more no passing areas does help, I think. What I did notice is that during the sunny days, there are more mirages created by the sun, it is very difficult to see dark cars coming at you. Many cars do not have lights on and the dark cars blend into the asphalt. If you are driving that road, I suggest driving with you lights on so oncoming cars can see your better. Eventually, the new asphalt will be lighter but right now it does create a concern. Drive carefully.
I also chose to drive to and from Boise by way of Emmett. The construction on I-84 this summer is extensive. As we have seen across the valley, serious construction accidents have happened. Be alert and drive defensively in all areas but particularly construction areas.
The Electric Department will continue work on the line behind K-Store and Waffleberry’s. The outage on Tuesday of this week is hoped to be the last in the area but residents will be kept informed. There have been several bumps in our power over the last few weeks. Many of these have been due to wind knocking off dead limbs. The power bumps and returns to service. The crew will continue to remove limbs around service lines. If you have areas of concern with lines involved, please contact the office. 208-414-1965. The City does not do tree trimming other than around service lines.
The Water Department is returning to work on the W. 9th Street project and will be installing 100 feet of pipe going south on the street. Watch for signage and avoid the area if possible as the roadway is very narrow. Wastewater Department will begin work next on the Pioneer Road north area.
Ridley’s Update: It appears the asbestos abatement in the old structure has been completed. I would expect the old walls to come tumbling down in the next couple of weeks. Plans for the new building have been okayed by our City engineer and we are waiting the hard copy so City Departments can sign off on the changes. No one from the store corporation has been in to pursue permits or pay required building fees at this time. Fingers crossed for more movement over the next two weeks.
Have a wonderful 4th of July and please be safe. Thank you to our veterans and current military service personnel for giving us the freedom to celebrate.
