The Mayor’s Corner 07/18/18

Mayor Diana Thomas

The Water Department and Wastewater Department are both working on w. 9th Street beginning this week so W. 9th will be closed to through traffic for the week of July 16-20. Local traffic is permitted and the street will be opened after 5 pm each day. The closure is only planned for this week at this time. Thank you for your cooperation as we continue the upgrades in this area.
We are asking for some extra eyes and ears at night for a while. There has been an increase in graffiti on streets and some walls. If you see any unusual or questionable activity please give the WPD or dispatch a call. This does damage to your public property and we would like to put a quick stop to the damage. Parents, do you know where your kids are at night?
The Recreation will be a part of the Community Health Fair being held this Saturday at the high school. Ken will have information available on upcoming programs. He will also have some of the new youth football helmets available for parents to see the safety features for this fall. Stop in and visit with him. Check local media for more information on times and programs being showcased.
A City and Countywide burn ban is in effect. The burn ban was issued on July 13 and will continue until further notice. There is NO open burning permitted. Recreational fires are only allowed in approved pits or purchased devices. If you have any questions, contact the Weiser City Fire and Rescue at 208-414-1483 and talk to Jake or Chief Nyce. Chief Nyce can also be reached on his cell phone at 208-642-0357. With the extreme temperatures, weeds and cheatgrass are ripe for burning and with the unusual amount of wind we have had, a fire could progress quickly. Remember to be cautious in off-road use of vehicles, many of our wild fires start from hot exhaust pipes in dry grass. Please be cautious and do not burn.
There is expected to be a lot of activity on Mortimer’s Island landing this weekend as the Northwest Hunting ‘n Fishing Organization will be holding a catfish tournament. The tournament activities will begin Saturday afternoon and continue through Saturday night and into Sunday. The tournament officially begins at 7 pm Saturday with final weigh in at 7 pm Sunday. Traffic will increase down the gravel road throughout the event.
Ridley’s Update: I wish I had an update but the status of the project from our end is still the same. We have received no hard copy of the final plans and no requests for permits as of Monday morning again. Not sure what the holdup from the company’s side is as we have received no official communication on the plans and permits.
It was another exciting weekend of rodeo this last week. There is always going on in Weiser. First Thursday in Weiser is Thursday, August 2 at Marbella’s and put the Court Street Car Show on your calendar for Saturday, August 4 in City Park. Rose Advocates have their fundraising golf tournament schedules for Saturday, August 11 at Rolling Hills Golf Course.
Temperatures remain high so make sure you go to all the fun events prepared for the heat. Stay safe and hydrated and no burning.
