The Mayor’s Corner 08/01/18

Thank you to all the volunteers and personnel who have been fighting the fires around us. It was amazing to listen to the coordination among our local fire departments in working to protect structures in the Keithly Creek Fire. Thankfully, no structures were lost and minimal injuries were incurred. Thank you, too, to our local businesses that were open early and late to provide meals and services to the fire personnel. Please keep our neighbors to the north in Adams County in your prayers as the Mesa Fire continues to grow into the timber areas. Remember, too, the many people fighting and impacted by fires across our country.
The Electric Department if working on State Street in front of Ruszoni’s Pizza to relocate the street light at the corner. That light pole has been hit and damaged multiple times so the best solution seems to be to move it away from the parking area. They should complete the work later this week. They are also labeling transformers and splice boxes throughout town for better service when repair work needs to be done.
With the Court Street Car Show this weekend, the Parks Department is busy preparing City Park for the event. The park will be busy from 7 am until 7 pm Saturday, August 4th. They always have some beautiful classic cars to enjoy as well as refreshments and music.
The Street Department will be handing flyers out to folks and businesses along Park Street next week to notify them of a one-day closure for cleaning and prepping the street for the planned overlay scheduled for either August 17th or 17th. We are still waiting notification of the final day from the asphalt company. The crew will be working to fill some holes and sinking areas before the major work is done. Please watch for signage and take an alternate route for the prep day and the day of the major work.
Work continues on W. 9th Street. The Wastewater Department plan to be finished with their work on the south end by August 10th. The Water Department still has work to do but some will not be done until this fall. Storm water work is done in the intersection but will continue farther south at a later date.
Hwy 95 south to Payette is on the Idaho Transportation Department’s schedule to chip seal between now and October 17 according to their website. We have not been notified of any dates at this time. I guess we’ll know when we see the coming.
Another reminder to be alert to scams. A friend received three calls on her cell phone warning her she was going to be arrested for non-compliance from the IRS. Just what she needed while on vacation visiting family. If you are contacted by scammers and aren’t sure, contact a family member or friend before ever considering an action. Call the local law enforcement, they have probably heard the story before. Do not fall for these folks, don’t even listen to their garble. Hang up.
Remember the fire ban. Happy Fair week to all the 4-Hers and their supporters. Stay cool and hydrated this week
