The Mayor’s Corner 08/22/18

I am going to repeat myself again. Scammers are relentless. Our office as well as our local law enforcement continue to get calls reporting phone calls about threatening calls regarding unpaid bills, grandchildren needing financial help and a multitude of other scenarios demanding your personal or business credit card numbers or information. Please do not fall for these threats or requests. Hang up the phone. If you have any questions contact the company direct and discuss the concern with a trusted family member or friend.
During the recent meeting with ITD, I asked about the work that was announced on the travel website. It seemed to me that the scheduled chip seal on Hwy 95 between Weiser and Payette was early since they had just completed the work this spring. Usually this process takes place one to two years after the initial surface is put down. The representatives agreed and said they would check on the schedule, then get back to us. Well, we haven’t heard anything but I notice the announcement is no longer on the travel website so it looks like we have a reprieve from that for the fall.
Clean up on W. 9th will take place this week. Asphalting was done last week but we have a little additional work to complete from Pioneer to Flintlock. The crew is still dealing with a water issue from what appears to be irrigation tail water that we are trying to find the source. Again, thank you for your ongoing patience on this project.
The City crew will be completing the ADA ramps this week as well as replacing the walkway at the Greenhouse. If you have children attending the pre-school at the Greenhouse, the fond entry way is being replaced so parents and staff will need to use the back entrances for a while. We will get is resolved as soon as possible.
School is beginning. Remember to watch for additional traffic around our schools. Buses are rolling and laws regarding the passing of buses will be monitored closely. Our children are some of our most valuable possessions, please guard their safety, walking or driving.
My good friend, Lyle continues to send me good articles and jokes. He recently sent me one about teachers. Our teachers have a hand on our future through their careers and are very appreciated but some humor helps their jobs too. A couple of fun quips: You know you’re a teacher when…. 1) You can tell if it’s a full moon without ever looking outside. 2)You’ve heard your profession slammed by someone who would never dream of doing your job. 3) You can hear 25 voices behind you and know exactly which one belongs to the child out of line. 4) When out in public you feel the urge to snap your fingers at children you don’t know and correct their behavior. I remember these very well.
Weiser Wolverines have started preparation and competition for fall sports. Pick you favorite and support our Wolverines. Go Wolverines. Every day is a good day to be a Wolverine.
A final thought from Lyle’s gleanings: “Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism.” (David M. Burns)
Have a great year teachers and school staff. We appreciate you.
