The Mayor’s Corner 10/17/2018

Mayor Diana Thomas

Homecoming week is here. Students in the Weiser School District particularly at the high school will be busy with activities all week. The Homecoming Parade will be Friday at 10:00 am along the same route as in the past. The Homecoming Football game will be Friday night at 7 pm at Memorial Park. Check local media for more information or contact WHS. Please remember to watch for kids and their activities all week.
This week is the Weiser Fire Department Open House on Wednesday, October 17 at the Fire Station on the corner of W. 1st and Court Streets. The Open House will run from 5-7:30 pm. There will be hot dogs, chili and nachos serviced by the Auxiliary group of the department. Fire prevention materials and giveaways will be available. In addition, there will be a raffle for a smoke detector, CO2 Alarm and fire extinguisher. Stop in and bring the kids to meet more of our local heroes.
Work continues on W. 9th Street. The Water Department is working now to connect service lines to the new main line up to Flintlock. Work farther north will continue as the water drains from that area after the canal water goes out. We are hoping to get the work done on the intersection of Pioneer and W. 9th shortly so it can be closed up and resurfaced before winter sets in. The surface on W. 9th will not be redone until the major project takes place next year.
This week should see the final Wastewater manhole cover replaced to finish the work on Park Street. There will be some asphalt work done on various projects around town this week. The asphalt plants will be closing down soon for the winter and we are trying to get as much done as possible before that happens.
October is always a busy month with activities and fund raisers for various causes. I want to take a minute to remind us of two very important emphasis in October. Those are Domestic Violence Awareness and Cancer Prevention Awareness. Our Rose Advocates provide an outstanding service to our community by working with victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. The cooperation between this group and our Weiser Police Department is vital to our residents.
We are blessed with two outstanding groups who do volunteer work with Cancer patients and their families. Angel Wings and Surviving Hearts also provide invaluable service to people in stressful times of their lives. I appreciate very much those who volunteer to provide support and encouragement to those using their services. All of these groups appreciate volunteers who join them in their missions.
This week begins the Weiser Little Theater production. Contact the Weiser Area Chamber of Commerce or go on line to get your tickets. Check out their web page or local media for more information and the dates.
This Saturday is also the fundraising Murder Masquerade Dinner Party for the Arrow-Heart Adventure Camps. The dinner will be held on October 20th at the Vendome beginning at 6:00 pm. Tickets are still available by calling 208-549-0646.
Election season is on. Make sure you are register to vote and become educated on the candidates and the issues.
