The Mayor’s Corner 10/31/2018

Mayor Diana Thomas

The day of princesses and goblins is here. Remember to watch for them as they dart around collecting goodies. With the many activities going on in the downtown core for Halloween, be sure to drive carefully along Commercial, Idaho and Main Streets near State Street and around the Vendome where the party is going on. Thank you to the producers, folks at the sugar beet dump and Amalgamated Sugar for working with the Chamber to help keep out kids safe this week along Commercial Street.
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” is a great quote and came to mind when reading the Argus Observer this weekend. One of the headlines in yesterday’s paper said “Payette leaders want a ‘beautiful community pond’ like that of Weiser’s”. We definitely have a wonderful asset in our Weiser Community Pond. The pond was a destination for several of our kids last Friday when school was out and that’s why it was developed. We love our kids.
The Weiser Fire Department had a great turn out at their Open House last Wednesday and appreciate all who were able to tour the station, look at the equipment and eat some chili, hot dogs and nachos. They still have their ‘Name the Firehouse Dog Contest’ going until Friday, November 1 so stop in and write down your suggested name. The winner will be notified, win a prize and have your picture taken with the Fire House Dog.
ELECTIONS: This is the last week of early voting for State and County elected offices. Booths are set up in the lobby of the Courthouse.
Next Tuesday, November 6 is Election Day. Polls are open from 8 am to 8 pm and you vote at your regular poll. You can register at the polls so contact the County Clerk’s office for more information. Remember you must have your ID to vote on Election Day. Become educated about the candidates and the Initiatives on the ballot before you go and exercise your privilege and responsibility.
The Parks crew will begin closing up the parks for the winter over the next couple of weeks. The goal posts and fence will be taken down and bleachers moved at Memorial Park. Bathrooms will gradually be closed down at all the sites. The last to be closed will be the RV dump to accommodate late campers and hunters. Alley cleanup should be finished this week with some grading in alleys with the moisture. Leaf pick up will begin the first week of November.
Two-a-week garbage pick up will end this week. Beginning November 5, we will go back to regular one day pick up. If you have questions, please contact the office at 208-414-1965.
Work is continuing in the river by the Water Plant to remove silt and sand that has clogged the river and moved the channel closer to the plant. The City received permits to help put the channel back and to shear up the banks to cut down on the erosion. This will help eliminate flooding threats to the plant.
Congratulations to the Weiser High School Marching Band’ Proud Sound’ for their performance at the District 3 competition. Champions again, good job Wolverines.
