The Mayor’s Corner 03/06/2019

Mayor Diana Thomas

Idaho Day was celebrated on Monday, March 4. The observance was established by our legislature in 2014 and first celebrated on March 4. 2015 to educated about Idaho, her culture, history, diversity, beauty, resources and greatness as designate in the official information. Just a reminder of a few Idaho facts.
President Lincoln signed the act creating the Idaho Territory on March 4, 1863 and joined the Union as the 43rd state on July 3, 1890. The great seal of Idaho was designed in 1890 by Mrs. Emma Edwards Green, the only state seal designed by a woman.
Idaho has 83,557 square miles about the size of Great Britain. It has 3,100 miles of rivers, more than any other state and has over 2,000 lakes. Our own Hells Canyon is the deepest forge on the North American continent ad is a mile deeper than the Grand Canyon. Idaho lies halfway between the equator and the North Pole. 63% of Idaho is public land and has more roadless alpine wilderness areas than any other state except Alaska. We are a state of great beauty and resources.
Even though Spring is not officially here, the departments are beginning spring work. The Park Department is getting the restrooms opened gradually as the weather permits. The bathroom at the Soccer field is open during the day and the new parking area is being completed in preparation of the spring soccer season. The north bathroom at Memorial Park is open for baseball season. These to restrooms have heat so the concern over frozen pipes is less. The other facilities do not have heat so will be opened as the nights get warmer.
As the alleys dry up, the Street Department will be out grading alleys to eliminate some of the ruts that developed this winter with all the moisture. The Adopt-a-Truck is again available for use. These trucks are only available to Weiser City residents and are not available to contractors. There is no cost if they do not have to be dumped and returned to the resident. Items need to be categorized and not mixed for transportation to the transfer site. Employees will drop the truck off at the end of the day and pick it up to be dumped at the transfer site. Contact the office for more details or to set up an appointment. The trucks may need to be parked in a driveway or on the street if the alleyways are too soft.
Congratulations to the Weiser High School Robotics teams for another successful year. This is such an interesting competition to see whose robot is the most versatile and powerful, of course. Qualifying for the state competition is a great accomplishment. Mr. Lundberg has built a great program and it is good to see the interest in the 4-H and After-School Program kids as the program grows.
Spring sports have begun so again watch for the increase of pedestrian and vehicle traffic around our parks, soccer complex, golf course, and the softball and track fields at the high school.
Enjoy the sunshine but be prepared for the rain is a good philosophy each day and in life.
