This week I am talking trash. Well, garbage anyway. Twice-a-week pick up for garbage will begin after Memorial Day unless the weather turns unseasonably hot. We have had a few issues with pick up lately. A couple of reminders as cleaning is taking place in yards. Do not place large metal items or tires in the garbage containers. We recently had damage done to the truck by metal poles that poked a hole in the side when the compactor smashed the material. The operator does not see all the items in the can as it empties.
Do not place yard waste in cans. The Washington County transfer site requires these items along with tires to be placed in separate piles and the operator is not able to stop and separate all the items. Yard debris can be placed in alleys away from the cans and picked up twice-a-year during alley clean up. This does not include tires, furniture or appliances.
The garbage containers are the property of the City and should be left in alleys or placed along side the curb if no alley is available. Cans in the alley should not be turned or moved as it makes it difficult to dump. Cans are not the personal property of the users. The monthly fee covers the cost of pickup. There is no additional charge for the second pick up in the summer, leaf pick up, Adopt-a-truck usage, or alley clean up. These services are free of charge for residents. There is a charge for dumping more often on the weekend if using the Adopt-a Truck.
Items left around the cans, on the lids or overflowing cans will not be picked up. The operator does not have the time to stop and pick up around the cans or break down cardboard boxes. Carboard should be broken down and taken to the recycling center or the transfer site. Thank you for your help with our trash pickup. This help makes it possible for the City to continue to extra services we provide for free to our residents.
Thank you to all those who were able to come and enjoy the Firefighters Breakfast last Saturday. The Chief reported they served almost 250 breakfasts which will help fund the needed $6000 to pay for the fireworks for July 4th and Christmas. They also take donations throughout the year to help reach their goal.
A special shopping day will be taking place this, Saturday, April 20th. ‘Hop into Weiser’ is a day set to encourage Weiserites to shop locally. Businesses will have specials, sales and prizes to encourage supporting our local merchants. Look for pinwheels which will identify participating business between 10 am -5pm. It will be a busy day with Easter egg hunts and WHS Golf tournament, but take time to stop in and buy locally.
Easter weekend is always a busy, family time. Enjoy the many activities sponsored in the community and by our local churches. It is a celebration of new birth and the arrival of Spring. Seeing the flowers burst forth with new life is always uplifting and gives us all hope of what is to come. Happy Easter.
