The Mayor’s Corner 05/01/2019

Mayor Diana Thomas

Happy May Day. Yes, I remember when we had the kids make May baskets to hang on the neighbor’s door to wish them a great day. Take time today to say hi to the neighbors you may not have seen much over the winter months. If the weather people are right, it should be a good beginning to May.
Before we know it May will be moving into June. Mother’s Day is on May 12th so start planning now. Graduation will follow right behind on May 19 and Memorial Weekend is the next weekend.
Fiddle Contest is not far away, folks. Plan your volunteer time and give the Fiddle Contest a call to let them know how you might be able to help during that busy week.
Tuesday, April 30 at 1:00 pm is the opening time for the bids for the W. 9th Street. Hopefully, the bids are low enough that the contractor can be hired and start very shortly. It will be a project that will take the whole summer and into the fall so patience will be needed. We appreciate the patience and cooperation to this point. When the street and bridge are completed, it will be a great improvement.
Bids on the E. Galloway Street project should be advertised in the next couple of weeks. The opening of the bids should happen in mid-May. Work must be completed by early fall to meet the timelines of the grant.
The City has received several suggestions over the last six months about additional activities in the parks. These activities would take up space that is currently open for use and are not revenue generating activities. The Council Committee, Parks and Rec department are reviewing current use and suggested increased activities to plan for future use of our parks. Weiser is blessed with nice parks, a pool, a soccer complex and a pond, and we want to plan for the best use of those areas for the greatest number of people.
Work has been done around the tennis courts by the Parks, Street and Electric Department to help prepare for possible resurfacing this summer. This resurfacing is being spearheaded by a group of local volunteers and W.H.S,. who are raising the money to put a better all-weather surface down. They are accepting donations for the project. Contact WHS if interested in donating. There has been increased use of the courts this spring which is great to see.
The Rec Department has been busy with Spring Soccer which has just finished along with Co-ed Volleyball. Youth baseball is beginning this week so the fields around town will get busy after school and on Saturdays. Drive extra carefully around the fields at the schools and in the parks for the next few weeks.
This is also Youth Track week. The track meet will be this Saturday at the WHS track. If you want to see some excited kids, this is the place to be.
Weiser Memorial Hospital and our local law enforcement had another successful Drug Take Back Day on Saturday. They were able to collect and destroy 102 pounds of unneeded drugs. Remember you can turn in unused drugs to the law enforcement at any time. Don’t leave them laying around the house or wash them down the drain.
Friends of Weiser Memorial Hospital has their spring pie sale coming up on Friday, May 10 beginning at 10:00 am at the conference room of the hospital. Watch for more information, these ladies make great pies. By the way, if you haven’t tried the 5th Street Bistro at the hospital for lunch, stop in for another good place in Weiser to eat.
Our local churches are joining with others across the country for National Prayer Day on Thursday, May 2 at noon at the County Courthouse. With all the hate being displayed in our world, it is great to come together in peace and love seeking strength.
