The Mayor’s Corner 07/10/2019

Mayor Diana Thomas

Howdy Ladies and Gents. It is Rodeo week in Weiser. This year the Weiser Valley Round-up is celebrating its 75 Anniversary. This is always a fun weekend and gives us a chance to see local and visiting cowboys and gals to showcase their skills. The action will begin Thursday night and continue through Saturday night with events beginning at 7 pm for pre-rodeo activities and the main event will begin at 8 pm. There will be mutton busting, junior bull riding and barrel racing along with the ever-fun wild cow milking before the main event. Check out local media for more information and plan to come out for all the festivities.
This year the WVR has invited past royalty of the rodeo to join in the celebration. Friday night, these ladies will be joining in the Grand Marshall celebration at 8 pm.
Our local rodeo and the grounds are overseen by a group of dedicated volunteers that work to keep the spirit and practice of rodeo alive in Weiser. The rodeo is held in July each year but these folks work all year to encourage our youngsters and oldsters to be involved in rodeo activities. They help sponsor the high school rodeo club and host events for them. The Fred Hust Arena is also opened on the weekends regularly throughout the year to encourage anyone interested in roping and riding to take part. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for keeping this tradition alive in Weiser. Congratulations on 75 years of tradition and fun.
There will continue to be work on the E. Galloway project. The sidewalks are expected to be completed by the early part of next week. Curb and gutters will then be installed along that area. There will be periods of time when the street will need to be closed. Please watch for road signs and avoid going around the barricades.
Idaho Power will be coming in around July 17 to move poles along E. 6th Street for the placement of sidewalks and curb and gutter on the west side. This part of the sidewalk project is expected to come after Galloway is completed.
A pre-construction meeting was held Monday on the wastewater project behind the Institute. The work is expected to take about 8 working days. This project will replace the old line and abandon that line.
Thank you to all who joined in the July 4th Parade. It was great to see so many young people and families come out to honor our country, veterans and former Mayor John Walker. I loved all the red, white and blue costumes and decorations. Thank you to all who came to watch and enjoy the fly-over and parade and to Wade and Christy Higgins and Emma Tolman for their beautiful tributes in music. Thank you, Veterans, for your service and for coming out so we could honor you.
Summer is quickly slipping away and the temperature is rising. Be careful if you riding or camping on any ground. Hot exhausts can cause fast moving wildfires and campfires left unattended or not put out properly can cause major damage in our forests. Enjoy the rest of the summer, but be alert to fire danger.
