Hello, Fall and October. This month is Fire Prevention Awareness Month and October 6-12 is Fire Prevention Week.
The Weiser City Fire and Rescue Department is having their annual Open House on Monday, October 7 from5-7 pm at the station. Come in for some chili and hotdogs and meet our local firefighters. Bring the kids in to meet some local heroes and play on the fire trucks. The department is happy to answer question and give information about volunteering. This is the time of the year that the fire departments remind us to check our alarms and replace the batteries to assure they are in working order.
The following information is from the First Alert web page:
- 3 of every 5 home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no working smoke alarms
- Carbon monoxide (CO) is the #1 cause of accidental death
- 60% of consumers do not test their smoke and CO alarms monthly*
- Only 47% of people report having CO alarms in their home
- Just 43% of homeowners have an escape plan
Are you fully protected and does your family have a plan?
Our local fire departments strive to have the most up-to-date training and look for grants to help purchase equipment. Recently, the City Fire Department has successfully applied for several grants. They received a grant from the Idaho Department of Lands to purchase BK radios, fire shelters, and personal protective equipment. They also received grants to purchase technology to assist with fire prevention and training of local firefighters and schools in and around our community. These grants came through the Idaho Firefighter License Plate Grant and through FM Global which is a large property insurer.
October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Nearly 3 out of 4 people know someone who is or was a victim of domestic violence. Our country has come a longways since the Violence Against Women was first enacted in 1994. Since that time the overall rate of domestic violence is said to have declined and states have stepped up to provide services to these victims and their families. The impact on our communities is far-reaching to family and friends.
Our local agency, Rose Advocates provides many services to victims and families and provides tremendous service to our local law enforcement. Monday October, 7 is their annual dinner and auction fundraiser at the Vendome. Contact the Rose Advocates office for tickets and more information.
The Departments are working on W. 9th again to get it resurfaced between Flintlock and Pioneer. Unfortunately, we were notified last Friday that the money for full funding of the project is not available at this time. The City will be working with engineers to change the scope of the project to meet the funding. The project will be put out for bid under the new specs next May. We are disappointed with the funding and time frame but know the cost of projects has gone up due to the many jobs available and ours is one of the smaller projects being bid. It is still the City’s goal to replace the bridge and provide curb, gutter and sidewalk all the way along the east side of W. 9th.
Twice-a-week garbage pick up is expected to continue through October as weather permits. Leaf pick up and alley clean up is expected to start after W.9th is completed and leaves fall.
Don’t forget the Mud Drag Races this Saturday, October 5. Gates open at 9 am and races begin at 10 and go all day. There are many classifications, something for everyone.
