Weiser Elk’s Lodge is having a flag retirement ceremony in November.. Many times throughout the year residents and businesses replace worn flags and look for the proper way to dispose of old flags. Here is our opportunity. The Elk’s issued the following invitation: “On November 16th, starting at 2 pm the Elk’s will be having a ceremony. If you have never been part of a retirement ceremony this is a good time to come on down and help or watch. If you would like to dedicate a flag to a past loved one you can do so at this time. If you have old worn flags bring them with you. For further information call the Weiser Elk’s Lodge at 208-549-9922 and ask for Bob.”

Alley Cleanup has begun. The crews began on the East side of town last week and will continue as weather permits. Just a couple of reminders about the material you place in the alley: 1) furniture, mattresses and tires are not to be placed in the alley cleanup area. The materials are transported to a location for disposal and must not include items other than yard and garden debris. 2) Please remember to cut limbs into manageable links no longer than 10 feet. It is difficult to move items through alleys that are longer. 3) Do not place debris that blocks the alley or neighbor’s property. We appreciate your help as we want to get this done before the weather changes more.

If you do not have an alley, please place debris curbside and notify the office or street crew. Leaves will be picked up later in the fall. Remember not to place leaves in bags if they are to be picked up by the City.

The Weiser Area Chamber will be having their Awards Dinner on Monday, October 21st at the Vendome. Those being honored were announced this past week. Congratulations to all the nominees and those selected. There are many deserving people and businesses in our community. Thank you all for making our community what it is. Watch local media for more about each honoree.

Thursday will be the second candidates’ forum for the upcoming November election. The Chamber is sponsoring this forum on Thursday, October 17th at 6 pm in the Vendome Event Center. Take time to get to know the candidates and the issues of concern to our citizens this week. Voting will take place on November 4 in your established precincts. Make sure you are registered to vote. If you have any questions regarding where to vote or about registration, contact the County Clerk’s office.

Weiser and Washington County lost another outstanding citizen last week. Mr. Phil Soulen passed away on Wednesday. Mr. Soulen was a lifetime resident of Weiser and gave much to our community. He served on our local school board, the cemetery board and the Weiser Memorial Hospital Foundation Board for many years among a few of his contributions. He was also a longtime board member of the Idaho Wool Growers Association where he served not only Weiser but across the State of Idaho and he was an avid University of Idaho Alum who has supported his U of I for many years. His accomplishments are too lengthy to enumerate. He was also a great friend and neighbor to many. Our sympathy and prayers go out to his family and friends. Thank you, Phil.

Halloween activities are beginning. Watch for all the fun and exciting gatherings. The first is Wednesday, October 16th at the Weiser Community Church at 6:30. Lots for the kidders to enjoy.
