The Mayor's Corner 11/13/2019

Mayor Diana Thomas

It is heart warming to me to see how many activities take place on Veteran’s Day to honor our veterans and those currently serving in the military. I am a Facebook “troller” which means I sometimes write but usually just read some of the posts. It was great to see so many of the people send thanks and words of encouragement to our veterans yesterday.

November is always the lead in to our busy holiday season. With the Arts and Crafts Fair less than two weeks away, the City is beginning to get the decorations ready for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Lights are being taken out and checked and the banners will be cleaned up for placement before Thanksgiving.

Our Street Department will continue to work on the alleys and leaves over the next few weeks. They will also be completing the winterization at Memorial Park. The goal posts will be removed and bleachers moved. The restrooms around the football field will be winterized and closed for the season.

The Electric Department is busy putting in a new transformer for the new building at the old Ridley’s site. They have been working on a service line adjacent to the Galloway Canal on State Street and found the remains of several animals which may explain some of the bumps we have had in the area.

We have received some calls regarding leaks around several valves. The Water Department exercises the values on an annual bases to make sure the valves are working properly. They often find leaks for the valves leak for a short while after being exercised. The crew does check those leaks and will be doing some repair work on them where needed. Watch for flaggers in the Flintlock Street area as they work.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant crew continues to work on the storm drain system in preparation for winter. We have had an ongoing problem on W. 2nd and Gladhart Street with flooding so the crew will be working in that area. Trees roots have grown around the pipe causing clogging. They will be working from the catch basin along the pipe. Please watch for signage.

Parents of juveniles, do you know where your children are at night. I remember that Public Service Announcement coming across television some years back. It is a good question for parents to remember. We have had some problems with juveniles out at night without supervision knocking over garbage cans and being destructive and disrespectful in our parks. Help our kids learn to be good citizens, don’t let them get away with vandalism and disrespect.

Don’t forget the Elks Club Flag Burning on Saturday, November 16 at 2 pm. If you have flags that need to be destroy contact the Elks or drop them by if you are unable to attend the ceremony.

Congratulations to the WHS Wolverine Football for a very successful season. You represent our community well.

Fall sports are over and winter sports practices begin right away. Check with local media and the school web sites for schedules so you can support your favorites.

Gear up for all the holiday activities: Annex School Dinner and Fundraiser, this Friday, November 15 at 6 pm at the school; Arts & Craft Fair on November 22 & 23 at the Vendome; Mystery Show Radio Show at the Snake River Heritage Center at 7:30 on December 1; WMH Festival of Trees beginning with the Gala on December 4 and continuing through the week; Christmas Parade at 6 pm on December 6; and many more. Something for everyone.
