Organizers of our Community Thanksgiving Dinner are again looking for desserts and volunteers for the annual dinner held at the Weiser Senior/Community Center on Thanksgiving Day. Toby Clary and Sue Slyter along with many family and friends work very hard organizing and preparing a delicious meal for anyone who wants to join them for dinner and a time of fellowship. The doors will open at 12:00 noon and the dinner will run until 3 pm. The meal is free and take-out meals are available for those who are unable to attend. Take-out meals are expected to be delivered by noon. For take-outs meals or to donate desserts, contact the Flower Basket at 208-414-2151, Sue at 208-270-1879 or Toby at 208-251-8138.
Winter reminders from our Chief of Police: Please remember to take time to clear windshields before driving. It is against the law and dangerous to drive with obstructed vision. Give yourself a few extra minutes to clean your windshield of frost and snow. Also, remember to make sure your vehicle is locked if you decide to warm it before traveling. Do not leave the motor running in unlocked cars. This can be a big temptation to others, unfortunately.
When walking or biking in the morning and evening hours, wear reflective clothing. It is difficult to see in the dark and as the sun is rising and setting. Parents remind your students to be cautious crossing streets and again wear light colored clothing and use sidewalks where possible.
Our fire department reminds us space heaters should be used with caution. Make sure they are plugged in a safe receptacle. The use of power strips with space heaters is discouraged by fire personnel. They should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip. High-voltage appliances like space heaters can overheat power strips, sparking a fire. Space heaters also use a lot of extra power. Many heaters use 1.5 kw per hour which will increase a power bill quickly.
Propane heaters are also possible danger zones. If using a propane heater make sure it is made for indoor use and the ventilation is adequate. We have had one accident already this year due to someone living and sleeping in an RV without adequate ventilation. Be safe.
The crew is still working on leaves but due to the dry weather, they are having to slow down. The machine puts off a layer of dust as it grinds the leaves. This dust then flies through the air and covers vehicles and creates breathing problems for those working near the machine. It is hoped that the expected moisture coming this week will help eliminate the problems. Without some moisture we have also had to put the grading of alleys on hold until we get some moisture. We appreciate everyone’s patience.
Ken Anderson, our Rec Director is encouraging anyone interested in becoming a life guard next summer to beginning checking the websites of YMCAs and other providers to schedule training. We are expecting to lose several of our guards as they graduate from high school and move on to other employment. This is the time to get training to be ready for summer. If there are questions, contact the office at 208-414-0301.
The community of Weiser has again lost an outstanding resident and a man who gave his life to preserving and giving life to others. Dr. Ed Wheeler healed and delivered many people over his long career in Weiser. He and his wife, Madelyn gave much to the community outside the medical world through their involvement in the business community and their church. Our sympathy and prayers go out to the Wheeler family.
