The Mayor’s Corner 03/03/2021

Mayor Randy Hibberd

I had a very humbling weekend. I’ve always wanted to learn calculus, but never actually pursued it. Last year I decided it was time. I thought the place to start would be to brush up on algebra first. So, I signed up for a college-level class online. It turns out that the course was designed by Harvard and MIT, so it’s fairly advanced. The first part of the course was good review and went along at a fairly good clip.

Now, I’m on the last 20% of the course. My brain isn’t as nimble as it used to be, or maybe it never was. Each section is a struggle and I have to THINK. There are 59 sections left. This weekend I sweated just to complete two units. Please pray for me.

Our battle against Covid-19 is gaining ground. As of this writing, Washington County has not had a new case reported since February 14th. There are several factors that have gone into this downturn. THANK YOU, Weiser, for doing your part by wearing your masks, distancing, and taking all of the necessary precautions to keep each other safe. We have gone from being one of the most highly affected cities in the state to being on the very bottom. Way—To—GO! This is one of the few times we want our community to be the very last.

As for vaccinations, if you are eligible and have not already done so, please call Ridley’s, Bi-Mart, or Family Medical Center for an appointment. Those eligible at this stage include first responders, EMS, teachers, medical workers, nursing home personnel, and those over the age of 65.

Here is another item for you. The Red Cross will be holding Weiser’s quarterly blood drive on Wednesday, March 10, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Vendome. For everyone’s safety, the Red Cross will be requiring donors to wear a face mask and, of course, maintain social distancing. They are strongly encouraging donors to log-on to the redcrossblood.org website to fill out the Rapid Pass questionnaire prior to check in to speed the process along. If you are interested in donating, but do not have an appointment, you can call Alex Chavarria at 208-602-7138 to set up a time.

Our Fire Department is reporting that recently they have been experiencing some problems with bystanders getting in the way of the fire equipment and crews in emergency situations. This can cause safety problems for the firemen, the fire victims, and bystanders. So, please… do not follow a siren. The siren is an alert for traffic to move out of the way, not a call to follow.

In other matters, the City will be enforcing the ordinance against people using RVs as living quarters. Our concern is for the safety of the people living in these units. RVs are not built to the rigorous standards used in the housing industry and are therefore not as safe as homes. For safety reasons, the ordinance will be enforced. If you—or people you know—are living in an RV, please make other arrangements soon.

In addition, the City’s ordinance officer will be watching out for variances with our weed, junk, and debris ordinances with warnings and citations where appropriate. At this next City Council meeting one of the items on the agenda is discussion and possible approval of a new ordinance strengthening these ordinances. Among other things, under consideration is a provision that, after all of the proper notifications and procedures and, as a last resort, will allow the City to enter a property to clean it up at the owner’s expense. Clean-up expenses would then be added to the property owner’s real estate taxes. Whether this new ordinance is passed or not, the City will be enforcing the Code.

Well, that’s it for this week. Thanks for reading and have a great week!
