The Mayor’s Corner 3/10/2021

Mayor Randy Hibberd

This past weekend, Cathy and I met with two of our daughters and our grandsons at Celebration Park south of Melba. One of the attractions at the park is a series of petroglyphs carved into the rocks by Native Americans 100 to 10,000 years ago. That is what we went to see. We didn’t use the maps provided, so we didn’t see all of the petroglyphs, but with the boys we had our own adventures.

As mentioned in the paper last week, the Weiser Lions Club is sponsoring a sock drive throughout the month of March for the benefit of Rose Advocates. It turns out, socks are the one item that do not get donated to charitable organizations. Therefore, when it comes to helping families in need, there is a shortage of socks.

So, the next time you are out shopping, please pick up a pair, or better yet, a package, of women’s, teen’s, or children’s socks for distressed families in need. The socks can be dropped off at collection boxes at the Artful Bon, Columbia Bank, Community Church, Hair Co., Metropole Coffee Shop, St. Agnes Church, Church of the Latter-Day Saints, Weiser Senior Center, or the Weiser Memorial Hospital Office Complex on State Street. Your small donation of socks can be a big help to a family in need.

On the covid-19 front, we continue to be in the least risky “Grey” zone. However, the numbers are beginning to creep up again. So, please – continue to wear a mask, distance, and sanitize.

In talking with our local providers, the vaccine program is working smoothly. If you are eligible, and haven’t already scheduled an appointment, you may call Ridley’s, Bi-Mart, or Family Medical Center to do so. Also, the State has set up a pre-registration site where anyone, regardless of current eligibility, can get online to get a place in line. My understanding is, those who sign up will then be contacted in the order they sign up when vaccine becomes available in our area. The site can be found at https://coronavirus.idaho.gov/.

The City is starting to get some requests for use of the Vendome again. While the Governor’s Stage 3 order remains in effect, gatherings are limited to 50 people. However, a provision was made for larger gatherings to receive an exemption from the District Health office if space allowed and all of the protocols for keeping the event safe are followed. The required request form to receive an exemption can be found online at https://phd3.idaho.gov/licensing-permitting/food/event-plan-review/.

The District Health Office, even with an exemption, recommends an indoor event be limited to 1 person per 64 sq. ft. After measuring the Vendome, the facility has been found to have the capacity to hold an event with up to 95 people using the 1/64 ratio. Therefore, events at the Vendome, regardless of measures used to contain the virus spread, will be limited to 95 people as long as the Governor’s Stage 3 order remains in effect.

In City business this week, I just want to remind dog owners that it is time to buy dog tags to register your dog. If you have ever had a dog that liked to get loose, you will understand how helpful it is to have your dog tagged.

My daughter once brought home a terrier from the State Fair that was an escape artist. That dog’s favorite past time was exploring the yard looking for ways to get out. She was small enough to find all kinds of cracks and holes that a person would swear were too little for her to squeeze through. The tag saved her and us several times.

Well, that’s it for this week. Hope you are taking advantage of the early Spring weather! Have a great week!
