The Mayor’s Corner 03/24/2021

Mayor Randy Hibberd

This past week Cathy and I took off for a couple of days. Cathy rented us a cabin on the edge of Castle Rock State Park, which is next to the City of Rocks National Reserve in southern Idaho just above the Utah border. If you have never had the chance to visit either one of these parks, they are well worth the visit. Both parks consist of some of the oldest granite outcroppings on the continent which have weathered over time to form a very interesting rock formations for people who are into geology, hiking, rock climbing, history, or just plain beautiful country. We ended up doing our last hike while it was snowing and still found it to be well worth-while. (For reasons I won’t explain, we didn’t do the rock climbing thing this trip.)

In City matters, our Police Chief, Carl Smith, would like to warn everyone about a scheme that has been going on here in town. An individual or group of individuals have been calling local residents and identifying themselves as Weiser Police. These people have even appropriated the Weiser Police telephone number to further make themselves appear legitimate. The callers are telling people the Social Security Administration or IRS is needing their personal information and if the information is not provided the Police will arrest them.

These calls are nothing but a scam. No one from Social Security, the IRS, or a Bank will ever call asking for your personal information. If you receive one of these calls and/or have questions you may call the real Weiser Police Department at 208-414-2244.

The 9th Street project continues to come along as planned. The sidewalk on the bridge is poured. Backfill on the north side of the bridge is completed. The backfill on the south side is taking more time since the road is being built up to provide a gentler slope to the bridge. In building the south side up, retaining walls are being put in place to contain the road bed. When completed this roadway will be a great improvement to the west side of town. Again, my hat is off to all of the people who persistently pushed for this project over the years.

In other City news, the Parks are now completely open. All restrooms and other facilities have been opened and ready to use for another season.

I would like to remind everyone the Electrical Department is doing an inventory of electrical meters in a project to upgrade the meter service and efficiency in town. There will be gentlemen in construction vests in backyards to inspect the meters in order to get an accurate count and location of meters to be replaced.

Also, the City offers level pay for your utility bills. The amount is adjusted each year in March, so now is the time to set up level pay for the year. If you are interested in having your utility bill set at the same amount for the next twelve months, just call the City at 208-414-1965.

In addition, I am being reminded to remind the pedestrians in town to use the flags at available crosswalks in town. The flags do a great job of calling attention to drivers that there is someone in the street. So please, take advantage of this great service by using the flags.

Well, that’s it for this week. Hope you have a good one!
