Did you see that Weiser was once again named SAFEST CITY IN IDAHO? This is the third time in just the last few years that Weiser has received this distinction. Congratulations to Weiser’s Finest, the COPs members, and to you, the people of Weiser for making this the safest city and the best place in Idaho to live.
This past weekend Cathy and I had our grandsons over for the first sleep-over in over a year. Their parents dropped them off Saturday morning around 9:00 and we delivered them back after church on Sunday. In between we went on a picnic, shot off rockets at the soccer field, made volcanoes, went for ice cream at Weiser Classic Candies, read stories, blew up balloons, jumped on beds, played with Legos and a bunch of other toys, and just enjoyed each other. For those of you who have grandkids and sleepovers, you will understand how Sunday afternoon was spent— relaxing and recovering. It is great to be able to comfortably be with family again.
This has been a long year dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. There have been new challenges for all of us in trying to figure out the best course of action in a time with so many unknowns and variables.
Cathy and I are grateful that vaccines were developed as quickly as they were and are now available. It is so nice to go places knowing that if we were in the 5% of people who come down with COVID-19 after getting the shot that the effect will be minimal.
We still wear a mask in public in order to not inadvertently spread the virus, but we are much more relaxed in public settings knowing we are not taking undue chances with our health or with the health of those around us.
I would encourage everyone who has not received the vaccine to do so. At this time, we are still under the Governor’s Stage Three order for the pandemic which means that group gatherings are limited to 50 or less people. Due to these limits the size of the events the City is able to hold at the Vendome and other places is severely constricted. I don’t pretend to know exactly all of the factors that Governor Little is taking into consideration in determining when to move from Stage Three to Stage Four or No Stage at all, but I would bet that the number of people vaccinated and fewer new cases per day will play a significant role in the Governor’s decision. Vaccinations and masks are something we can all do to affect the numbers so that we can completely reopen the State with reasonable assurance. So please, do your part for all of us.
In City news this week, the Police Chief, Carl Smith, would like me to let everyone know that our police have been stepping up their traffic stops, especially with speeders. It seems that with the spring’s arrival a lot more people are driving a lot faster. This trend has been noticed and is being worked on. If you are one of those whose foot has been heavy on the pedal, please slow down.
The 9th Street project continues to make progress. The contractor is in the process of laying the storm drain at the time of this writing. Braun Construction, the contractor, is getting into the final stages. The project is expected to be completed before the middle of May.
Well, that’s it for this week. Hope you have a very pleasant time enjoying the SAFEST CITY IN IDAHO!
