The Mayor’s Corner 05/22/2024

Mayor Randy Hibberd

Whew! Cathy and I drove a lot this past weekend. A former banking client’s daughter was getting married in Colefax Washington near Pullman on Saturday evening. As happened with many of the people I dealt with in banking, we became good friends. I had known the bride since she was a little girl when she would bring pollywogs and other small creatures into the bank to show me. She is now a veterinarian. We just couldn’t miss this wedding.
So, Cathy and I bundled up and drove our little roadster with the top down and the heater on to Colefax. Top down is the only way to go when the weather permits. It allows you to see better, to feel, and to hear the scenery around you as you drive. Sunday, on the way back, out of necessity, the top stayed up. Oh Well! This is Idaho in the springtime.
So much for personal stuff. Now on to City business.
For those of you who are looking forward to the City Pool opening for the summer, Ken Anderson, from the Recreation Department would like you to know that the pool will open Tuesday, May 28. The hours through Friday, May 31 will be from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The pool will be closed in the evenings that week and on the weekend, June 1st, and 2nd to allow time to train the new lifeguards. Beginning Monday, June 3rd, normal pool hours will be observed for the rest of the season.
Also, Ron McDaniel from the Street Department would like to let you know that the annual fishing pond cleanup will be taking place on Friday, May 31st starting at 9:00 a.m.
For those of you who may not know, the fishing pond is located at the south end of E. 3rd Street. It includes a parklike environment for fisher people of all ages. Included is a walking path, benches, and even access to a deck over the water for those with disabilities. The pond was the brainchild and work project of the Indianhead Flyfishers Club. If you have never been to the pond, you owe it to yourself to go down, take a look, and walk around. The fishing pond is a true community gem and the community owes a debt of gratitude to the Indianhead Flyfishers!
So, if you are interested in the pond for fishing, walking, or just because, load up your shovel, rake, broom, leaf blower, weed whacker, and whatever, and meet at the fishing pond at 9:00. Lunch will be served to anyone participating. It is a great way to get out, do something for the community, and rub elbows with people of similar interests!
I would also like to give a shout out to Becky Anderson and her crew of volunteers who recently worked on painting the interiors of the restrooms in City Park and Memorial Park. Becky had approached the City with the idea. The City provided paint and equipment. Becky and the volunteers did the rest. THANK YOU! for stepping up volunteering your time and effort!
Well, that’s it for this week. If you happen to be a volunteer working at the pond and see a kid trying to capture pollywogs, don’t discourage them. You never know where that curiosity might lead.
