The Mayor’s Corner 01/30/2019

Mayor Diana Thomas

Winter hit for a day. Thankfully, we had no accidents and people had an opportunity to use those new snow shovels and ice melt. I was traveling on Wednesday to Boise to visit the legislature but roads were fine by 11:00 am. Interesting how many people there remembered our circumstances two years ago and wanted to know how we are doing.
The lack of snow has made it possible to continue working on maintenance at the plants. It is also allowing the Streets Department to continue trimming trees along the streets. There are many trees throughout town that are old and not healthy so the City will be working with property owners to find safe solutions to those big trees and look at replacing some of them.
The Street Department worked in the area around the Soccer complex to fence in the Fire Department training grounds. They are also placing ground up asphalt to enhance and enlarge the parking area before spring soccer starts. Parking has been and will continue to be tough in the area but we are looking for was to mitigate the impact on the neighbors.
The Weiser City Fire Department along with the Rural Fire Department and the Washington County Search and Rescue had a training Saturday at the Weiser Community Pond. Two trainers from Nampa came to give training on rescue procedures in freezing water and icy conditions. Volunteers first responders spent time practicing rescues in and out of the water. The Pond has been a great venue to use for this training.
The City of Weiser has been looking at projects to improve safety on our streets. The West 9th Street project is one of these projects. We have also been looking for a way to fund a stoplight on Hwy 95 and Main Street to make that intersection safer for vehicles and pedestrians. We have not been able to get a solution for that concern but will continue to work on it.
Another area of concern has been along East Galloway leading to and from Weiser Middle School and on to Park Intermediate School. With Ridley’s moving their store to E. 6th Street we have also been looking for ways to make it safer to walk to the Ridley’s and BiMart corridor. The City has been applying for grants and in budgeting to help improve this area.
If the legislature passes the funding of projects under the Strategic Initiatives or Surplus Eliminator funds, the City of Weiser is in line to receive money to resurface East Galloway from State Street to E. 6th Street and allow us to complete curb, gutter and sidewalk all the way to E. 6th. This will enhance the walkability to the shopping area and make a safe route for walkers in that area. We are also looking for funding to complete the sidewalk from E. Park Street to Pence Road to complete that walkability. This project would take place this summer and be done by fall.
On a side note, the City has received no update on the current status of the Ridley’s store. All permits have been issued to this point so we don’t know of the time schedule on the construction.
Soup time. Don’t forget St. Luke’s Free Soup on Thursdays through Lent. In addition, the Weiser Community Church has Soup and Showers on Tuesdays. Soup is served at 12:00 noon at the church at 240 E. Main Street. The church will be open from 11 am until 1 pm for showers. If possible, bring your own towel, if not towels are available.
Don’t forget the Groundhog Feed Saturday, February 2 at the Community Church. Check the local media for times and prices.
