The City invites the public to an Open House on Monday, March 12 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in Council Chambers for retiring City Attorney, Chuck Kroll. Chuck has been the Weiser City Attorney since August 31, 1978. During part of that time Chuck also served as Washington County Prosecuting Attorney and maintained a private practice as well. Please join us in honoring Chuck and thanking him for his 39+ years of service to our community. This Open House will precede the regular meeting of the Weiser City Council at 7 pm.
Daylight savings time again. Sunday, March 11 is spring forward time. Don’t forget to set your clocks forward one-hour Saturday night so you don’t miss church. I decided to search the internet for ‘why’ we still fight this battle. As many know, not every state follows daylight savings time(DST). Arizona and Hawaii refuse to change their clocks which can cause some additional confusion for travelers. Several other states have considered getting of DST but as yet haven’t chosen to do so. Internationally, 70 nations practice DST but that is less that 40% of the countries.
Some people still believe that DST was adopted to help the farmers but I know a lot of farmers that would rather have the extra hour of sleep. Farmers were a large group that fought the change. Another thought was that DST would save energy and that was why the US Congress passed the Energy Policy Act in 2005 which lengthened DST by another month making it eight months now. However, the Department of Energy study in 2008 found there was a small decrease of about .0003%, where a UCSB study found that energy use actually increased. So, I‘m not sure the “why” of the change any more.
There is lots of interesting information out there about the effect on physical and mental health as well as how likely you are to get robbed during DST. The point is; however, Idaho still follows DST so be ready this weekend to have the good and bad of it begin.
Remember March 13 is voting day on the Weiser School District Supplemental Ley Bond. Make sure you get your questions answered so you can make an informed decision. Our kids and schools are two of our biggest assets and we want to do what is best for them. Voting will take place at your usual voting precinct. If you have questions or are not sure where that is contact the County Clerk’s office or the School District Office at 208-414-2092 or 208-414-0616.
I ask one of our local residents if I could share something she had posted on social media. She didn’t say no, so here goes. “With all this news about kids walking out of school for 17 minutes to stand up…instead, in the month of March, why don’t they find 17 kids to stand up for or befriend? Kids in their own school who are bullied or picked on or feeling down.. stand up for them, get to know them, learn about them. Change 17 lives. Make 17 new acquaintances. BE THE CHANGE! Change the school you’re in. Search for moments to do GOOD!”
Thanks, Stacy, what a good message for all of us. Find 17 people who could use support or encouragement. Reach out to 17 new folks to let them know Weiser cares about our Kids, Community and Country.
