The Mayor’s Corner 04/11/2018

The City received building plans from the Ridley’s engineers on Thursday to begin the review by the City engineers and the department heads. A City employee hand delivered the plans to our engineers in Meridian Thursday afternoon to expedite the time frame. We were also informed that the company hired another engineering firm to conduct the State required traffic study. Mr. Ridley visited with us on Friday morning to seek some additional help from the City in proceeding while they work on the ITD traffic study. The City Council will address that request at the City Council meeting Monday. Weiser Department heads have been given copies of the plans and have begun their review. The City is proceeding as quickly as we can but still must follow ordinances and regulations that address this type of project. Misinformation about the City holding up the process is much like the election information, it makes someone feel like an expert who doesn’t care to find and repeat the true picture.
Primary election day is Tuesday, May 15 so make sure you are registered and take time to find the ‘facts’ about the candidates. Nothing like the political season to remind you why you’re happy when that season closes.
I am personally ‘kind of’ a political junkie, but the negativity that comes with it is sad. Inference and misinformation don’t help anyone make a good, informed choice. If the candidate can’t win on their own ability and virtue maybe they need to do something else to contribute. Okay, off my soap box. Please remember election day is coming.
Work is getting underway on the City utilities along W. 9th Street. The WWTP crew will begin replacing pipe from the south end. Currently one-lane of traffic will be open with flaggers posted during the working hours. A safety coffin will be placed in the excavation for the safety of the workers when depth warrants it.
The Water Department will be starting work from the north end of the project and again plan to have flaggers and one-lane of traffic open. Please watch for the crews in this area. We appreciate the patience of the residents and those that use this street. If you are a walker or runner, you may want to avoid this area during construction.
This Saturday is the Firemen’s Breakfast from 7-11 at the Vendome. This is the big fundraiser for fireworks for 4th of July and Christmas. Stop in for a breakfast of pancakes, biscuits and gravy and more. Donations are accepted at anytime through the fire department or the City office. Tickets are available at the door.
Backflow season is also here. If you have a hook up to the City system remember you are required by law to have your backflow device checked before beginning use. The Water Department will be contacting residents to remind them in the next few weeks. If you have any questions, contact the department at 208-414-1775.
The STOP sign next to City Hall on the corner of W. 1st and Idaho did get blown over during the wind storm this weekend. Please be cautious at that corner. A temporary sign is in place but is lower. The Electric Department was busy with outages and limbs on lines following the wind storm as well. Thanks for your patience as the crew worked to get everyone back on line. SPRING!
A special thank you to the Elk’s Lodge for their donation to the WPD After School Program Robotics. It takes a village.
