The Mayor’s Corner 06/06/18

Mayor Diana Thomas

Spring weather has certainly been interesting this year. The high winds have brought down limbs throughout town. The parks have lost a few large limbs, as has the Rolling Hills Golf Course and throughout town. We have had a few short power pumps attributed to limbs coming down onto lines and transformers. Many times, we get a bump and the system will automatically reset itself, thankfully. In other cases, the crews have been able to get them clear quickly. Thanks for your patience.
There continue to be new scams cropping up to part us from our money. Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho recently shared some good tips to avoid fraud and protect ourselves I wanted to share.
1. Do not believe your caller ID. Current technology makes it very easy for scammers to fake information. We used to be able to depend on what we saw but that is no longer the case and the number you see many not be real.
2. Hang up on ‘robocalls’. Robocalls are those calls that are computer generated and when you answer no one is on the line immediately. You then get a recorded or live sales pitch. Just hang up, don’t even wait for them to come on the line. Do not press 1 to speak to a representative or to ask to be taken off their call list. If you respond this can lead to more phone calls.
3. Watch for con artists. Do not send money or give out personal information in response to requests.
4. Talk to someone you trust before taking any actions. Scammers will pressure you to come to a decision. They may even threaten you. Slow down and talk to a friend or family member.
5. Keep informed by signing up for scam alerts from the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov Stay alert.
Plans are progressing quickly with the groups involved in the preparation for Fiddle Week. Just a reminder: all activities for the festival with be centered in Memorial Park. No vendors or music are planned at the City Park. That park will be left for families and visitors to enjoy for picnicking and getting together. Court Street will not be closed off this year during the festival.
A new event this year will be a fun run which will follow the parade route and will start just before the 12:00 pm parade starting time. Contact the Weiser Chamber office for more information.
First Thursday will be this week at the Weiser Signal American. Stop in and say hi to Sarah and the crew and visit with other businesses and community people. Keith Bryant is doing a cooking demo which should be fun. Time of the event is 5-7 pm.
The Weiser City Council will be meeting on Monday, June 11 at 7 pm. This will be the second meeting where discussion will be held about the 2019 budget. The agenda will also include requests for capital expenditures out of the 2018 budget including materials for the W. 9th Street Water project and a police car. Acceptance of a bid on the building at the airport will also be on the budget.
Temperatures have risen quickly, remember to stay hydrated while spending time outside. Heat also translates to many of us in increases in electricity due to the use of fans and air conditioning. Be aware. Enjoy our great weather.
