The Mayors Corner 06/13/18

Mayor Diana Thomas

It’s hard to believe we are less than a week away from another Fiddle Contest and Festival. We are already seeing an increase in traffic and visitors to our area. City crews are busy this week getting Memorial Park set up and putting up fiddles and flags. Most major work will continue after Fiddle Week is over. There will be a Kids’ Day again this year in the center of town on Tuesday so remember State Street will be closed off for a few hours that day. Come down and enjoy the activities.
Activities for the Festival week have already started and more music will happen this weekend for the Weiser River Music Festival. I don’t have details but watch the local media and their Facebook page for times and groups.
The second Community Block Party is this Wednesday, from 5-8 pm on State Street between Idaho and Main Streets. There will be vendors and music so come down and visit businesses and neighbors.
With all the outside activities, it is time to remind everyone to be prepared for the mosquitoes. Moisture and sun help plants to grow but also bring out the little pests. Some tips from Southwest District Health. 1) Cover up exposed skin when you’re outdoors. 2) Apply insect repellent containing DEET to your exposed skin and clothing. 3) Avoid mosquitoes when they are most active at dawn and dusk. 4) Eliminate standing water in any place or container that may give mosquitoes a breeding site. 5) Empty bird baths and clean decorative ponds every 3-6 days. 6) Repair or install screens around your home.
The City does spray City parks regularly but that does not eliminate the presence of mosquitoes completely. Take steps to protect yourself and your family. Be sure to follow instructions on insect sprays, particularly for children under 12. Fight the bite!
Our crews have been working on alley clean up and will continue after preparations for Fiddle Week are done. The City Street crew has finished alleys on the west side and moved to the east side of town. Please remember any yard debris in the City right-of-way or the alley, will be removed for disposal. If you have a compost pile, that pile should be placed on personal property and not in the alley. Items such as tires, sofas and mattresses will not be picked up. Those items should be taken to the Transfer site.
Thank you to the Weiser School District for partnering with the Weiser Police Department to provide the School Resource officer for the schools. This has been a long-standing partnership to benefit our kids.
Thank you to the many volunteers that work with our youth throughout the year on sports programs. Summer brings numerous camps put on by volunteers to give our youth a multitude of activities to be involved in. Many of the activities introduce them to life-long sports and activities. I know if I begin to name people I will miss someone but thanks to Joe Malay and his crew who spent the past week introducing golf to almost 80 kids; to Coach Angie Soulen and her crew for introducing kids to the life-long game of tennis; to Jen Weldon and crew for the cheer camp held each year during Fiddle Week; to Michelle Dolton and crew for encouraging our swimmers on the swim team; to the adults who work with our rodeo club all year; and to all the soccer, baseball, wrestling, and football coaches who give their time during the year. If I missed a program I apologize, let me know. (I’ll pick on the arts folks next week.) It definitely takes a village and we have a great village. Thank you.
Have a safe weekend.
