The Mayor’s Corner 08/08/18

Driving down from McCall this weekend, it was easier to see the damage done by the two fires along Hwy. 95. The extent of the fires is massive across private, state and federal land. Thankfully no human lives were lost but habitat, grazing and perhaps some wildlife were damaged. Again, thanks to those who have been fighting the fires in high, high heat.
Update: I was a little disappointed when I drove through town and see the old Ridley’s building still W. 9tintact but was told some ‘stuff’ has been moved out before demolition. The City did receive correspondence from Mr. Ridley indicating someone would be coming in toward the end of the week to apply for a permit and pay fees for the site and foundation work. Still hoping.
Fall sports practices are beginning this week so activity around the school and high school fields will increase. Schools are open and kids will be returning to school on August 22. I understand the first home football game is scheduled for August 24th. Please drive carefully around the schools.
The Street crew will be working on crosswalks and signs around all of the schools over the next few weeks. They will also be working on the repair work on Park Street this week to prepare for the major work next week. Please watch for signage and workers for the next two weeks all along East Park from State Street to Hwy. 95. It will be nice when it is done and before school starts.
West 9th Street is scheduled to be closed during the day for the next week to complete wastewater work from Pioneer Road to Flintlock. Traffic can use W. 8th to detour the area. Again, please watch for signage. The Water Department has completed ground work but still have testing to be completed before switch service lines to new main line.
Congratulations to retired Weiser High School teacher and athletic director Terry Mooney for his induction into the Idaho High School Activities Association Hall of Fame. Terry has put “tons” of time and energy in serving Wolverine athletes over his years of service. He, also, spent hours of ‘seat time’ teaching young drivers the rules of the road. Congratulations, Terry, and thank you for your service to our youth.
It was good coming home from our vacation with family and seeing our newly painted house shining in the sun. I appreciate the people in our community that provide services and receive little recognition of what they give to our community. It is the local businesses and service personnel that keep us going with their efforts and loyalty to our small community knowing they could make much more money in other markets. Some, like our painters, work other jobs and work at night and on weekends in hot weather, still taking great pride in what they do. Thanks, Hamiltons and others like you for being part of Weiser. I love using local people and hope others will too when possible.
Farmers’ Market has opened again for the season on Thursdays from5-7:30 pm at the Depot. This is a great place to buy local produce and products. The organizers are always looking for new vendors so contact them at the market or check local media for more information.
August is here hot and dry. NO Burning until further notice and keep the water handy.
