The Mayor's Corner 10/30/2019

Mayor Diana Thomas

Halloween is here. Please drive carefully Halloween night. There will be activity in the downtown area from 4-9pm. State Street will be closed off between Main and Commercial to accommodate the trunk-or-treat and business trick-or-treaters beginning at 4 pm. The Spook House at the Star Theater and Halloween Party at the Vendome will keep the area busy. The Farmers’ Market is planned for the alley space beside the Star Theater.

There are also Halloween activities going on at the Christian Church off State Street and the Cornerstone Church on E. 5th. Please drive carefully in all these areas and in our neighborhoods.

A reminder to the parents of our trick-or-treaters: Be sure to have the kids wear bright colors over those warm coats. Make sure the little goblins are dressed warmly as there is a sudden dip in temperatures expected this week.

Next Tuesday, November 5 is Election Day. Remember to get out to vote in the City and School District elections. Polls are open from 8 am to 8 pm. Check the information in local media on your polling place or contact the Washington County Clerk’s office.

Alley clean up continues this week. In addition, leaf pick up has started on the west side of town. The crew is hoping to get some of the leaves picked up before moisture and freezing temps slow us down. The parks have been winterized and shut down for the season except for the restrooms around the football field. They will be open for a couple more weeks.

The Wastewater crew completed their work on State Street main line last week and have moved to the main line on Commercial. Some of the work will be done at night to avoid traffic and some will be done in the daylight hours. Watch for flaggers and signs.

The Electric and Water Departments continue to work at the new commercial building sites off Park and State Streets. They are also working with contractors on new residential construction around the community.

This is the last week of two a week garbage pick up. Beginning Monday, November 4 we will return to one pick up per week for residential and back to the regular pick up for commercial. If you have questions regarding your pick up contact the office, 208-414-1965.

Congratulations to our Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer teams for their outstanding showing at the State tournament this past weekend. The Boys finished 2nd in the 3A State and the Girls 4th. Well done, Wolverines.

Congratulations, also, to the WHS Proud Sound for their 2nd place finish in the District 3 Band competition at Bronco Stadium this past weekend. We’re proud of your representation of our community.

Good luck this next week to our Cross Country and Volleyball teams as they compete in their State Tournaments. Good luck, too, to our Football team as they travel to southeastern Idaho to meet Marsh Valley in the State Play Ins. Go Wolverines.

This Saturday November 2 is the 4th Annual Murder Mystery and dinner sponsored by the Arrow-Heart Adventure Camps. This year’s mystery is “Murder of a Millionaire”. Doors open at 6 pm and dinner is served at 7 pm. Come enjoy the silent auction, raffle, dinner and mystery. Tickets are still available by calling 208-549-2397 or call or texting 208-550-1614.
