Happy Thanksgiving month of November. The cold weather last week certainly reminded us that winter is on its way. Don’t forget to winterize your homes. Take in your hoses, blow out irrigation systems and protect your water pipes.

The change in time is another great reminder to check your fire and carbon monoxide alarms. Make sure your batteries are good and the device is working.

City offices will be closed on Monday, November 11 to honor our Veterans. Weiser City Council will meet Tuesday, November 12 at 7 pm in Council Chambers.

The schools will be in session but each school will take time during the day to honor those who have served and currently serve our country. The Senior Center and the Elks’ Club will have meals at noon and a time of recognition for veterans. Everyone is invited to join in and veterans eat for free. The Elks will also be having a Flag Retirement Ceremony on November 16 beginning at 2 p. For further information contact Bob at 208-549-9922.

One of the great freedoms we have because of the willingness of these folks to serve is the freedom to vote for our local officials. I hope you took the opportunity to cast your votes in the elections yesterday. At election time, I always think of the quote by Theodore Roosevelt: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.” Thank you to all who ran. Public service is rewarding in so many ways. Newly elected officials for the City will be sworn in at the regular City Council Meeting in January.

City crews continue to work at winterizing the water and wastewater plants. The Wasterwater crew will finish up the jetting of lines this week and will then move on the cleaning storm drains again before we get out first snow.

The Street and Parks crews are working on the alleys and will continue leaf pick up. Garbage pick up is now back to once-a-week pick up until next spring.

Congratulations to the WHS Girls’ Cross-Country team on their performance at the State meet in Pocatello last weekend.

Congratulations to the Wolverine football team on their victory at Marsh Valley. They now play Timberlake, Saturday, November 9 at 2 pm Mountain time at Timberlake. Good luck team and travel safe to all making the trek north.
