Hello! First of all, I want to say Thank You! for allowing me the opportunity to serve you as mayor. This is a privilege that will be cherished.
Part of the educational experience in preparing for this job, was the campaign itself. I chose to go door to door to meet as many people possible so they could put a face with a name and talk if they wanted to. Although it is time consuming and requires physical effort, I would recommend this to anyone wanting to serve through a public office. Going door to door allowed me to find out what concerned you at your front door and sometimes in your living room.
These are some of the take-aways gathered in this process. You care about each other. You care about what happens in this town. You care about the appearance of the town. You want moderate growth, but you want to keep the essence of Weiser, our quality of life, our values. You want the city to be responsible and to use its resources wisely. There were other important issues brought up, but these were the overarching ones.
None of these take-aways were really a surprise. They are the reasons I want to live here too. It gives us at the city our marching orders on what you want.
The transition from campaign to swearing in has been interesting. As a city council person, I was able to see an overall view of how the city operated. As a mayor elect, I have been trying to learn the nuts and bolts of how the cities operates. Mayor Thomas and the entire crew have bent over backwards to help me learn and understand. This is an education that will continue throughout the time in office.
During this transition, its been pleasing to see how well the city departments and employees work together. Every Monday morning at 8:00 the Department heads from Waste Water, Police, Roads, Water Plant, Fire, Treasury, Recreation, Repairs, Electrical, and Public Works meets with the City Clerk to briefly tell what is going on in their departments and what will be coming up in the week ahead. If one department needs help, it is offered from those who might be a little slow that week. The cooperation between the city employees is great. This group will be a joy to work with and it says a great deal about the great leadership the city has had.
Speaking about what is going on ahead, the Recreation Dept. is looking for lifeguards for the upcoming swimming season. This year, in order to remain fully operational, we are looking to replace 6 to 8 lifeguards. If you, or anyone you know may be interested, training will be available this spring. Please contact the Recreation Dept. at 208-414-0301 for more information.
The Street Dept. has completed picking up the leaves raked to the curb. However, not all of the trees cooperated in letting go of their leaves on a timely basis so there will be more raking to be done. To compensate, the crew will resume pickup in the spring when weather permits.
The Street and Electrical Dept. will be trimming trees this week to avoid problems with rotting and interference with electrical lines.
Well, that’s it for this week. That is one article down with at least 207 more to go. Looking forward to it. Thank You! again, for letting me serve you!
