The Mayor’s Corner 03/02/2020

Mayor Randy Hibberd

The city crews are hard at it getting ready for another active year. Crews are cleaning up leaves in the park and planting replacement trees. The City Park’s restrooms will be turned on this week. Next week we should see drinking fountains turned back on if temperatures permit. Streets are being swept to get rid of leaves and sand from the sanding trucks and a winter’s worth of dirt. Shrubs are being replaced at the Vendome with a variety that will be easier to maintain.
Alleys are being graded to get rid of holes. If you are looking to have potholes filled in the roads, you will need to wait for a bit. Hot asphalt is usually not available until about Apr. 15. It is possible to put a cold patch on now, but it is not practical. The cold patch will deteriorate next winter and need to be replaced again whereas the hot patch will not. So please be patient. We want to be able to do the job right and be cost effective. Just watch where you drive.
You will also see crews out painting on the streets this week for cross walks, turn lanes, etc. Others will be putting ground sterilizer on areas of the city property where it’s needed to keep weeds down.
For those young individuals who are looking for summer employment this year and in future years, there are several openings for life guards. Training is available over spring break. If you are interested, now is the time to contact our Recreation Dept.
The Rec. Dept. is also busy taking registrations for spring sports. The deadline for soccer is March 4, so hurry if you have not already signed up. Registration is also taking place for baseball in the park and youth track. The track program is for children up to the 6th grade. It involves a week of training with a track meet on the following Saturday. The children can be involved in an unlimited number of events. In addition, a volleyball camp will be held this spring for kindergarten to 5th graders, both girls and boys.
As you can tell, there is a lot going on in this little City of Weiser. This really is a great place to live!
