The Mayor’s Corner 04/13/2020

Mayor Randy Hibberd

Good Job! Keep it UP!
I want to thank everyone for your efforts at physically distancing ourselves. IT IS WORKING! We have now completed three weeks of the Governor’s “Stay at Home” order. It took a little bit of adjustment to get used to, but seems to be becoming the new normal. Statewide the number of new cases per day peaked about a week after the order and has since been on a downward trend.
Here in Washington County, as of Monday morning there have been 70 tests, with 64 negative results, and only 1 positive. This is beating the state average of 10% tested coming back positive. Our result is 1.5%. Keep it up! Together, our efforts are paying off! Keep up the physical distancing. Limit your grocery shopping to once a week with only one family member going to the store. Wash your hands. These are simple things, but in doing these, you are making a difference.
That being said, please continue to support our local businesses, restaurants, and cafes as often as you are able. We are lucky to have a wide variety of choices for take-out or delivery for a town this size. It is one of the many things that make Weiser such a nice place to live. We want to make sure that all of our businesses are able to continue after this virus has slowed down.
This may also serve as a good lesson on why it is important to shop locally. These businesses are here to serve you in good times and bad. If you like having these business here in an emergency like this, please remember they need to be supported at all times.
On the lighter side, this is reminding me of times as a kid, when we had to make our own entertainment. I’m reading more, getting more yard work done, working on projects, just to name a few things. The slower pace is actually kind of refreshing. Cathy and I sat on the front porch Saturday and spent time just watching a butterfly work our maple tree out front.
Around the city, the street crew is taking advantage of the lower traffic volumes. They continue to paint cross-walks. All of the city parking lots have been re-striped and they have restored the striping on all of the county parking lots inside the city limits. When the cross-walks are finished, the street crew plans to paint the parking space markers downtown.
Again, I want to thank all of you for your efforts at staying home. We don’t know how long we will be in this situation. It is causing all of us to face new challenges, but you are rising up to meet the challenges. GOOD JOB!
Weiser really is a great place to live!
