This last weekend, Cathy and I had our grandsons over. I took part of Friday off to spend more time with them. They are growing so fast; it is hard to keep up with their development and changing interests.
The younger brother’s first wish was for us to “wrestle”, which is just a word to describe the two of them ganging up on grandpa and grandpa throwing them on the bed to keep them at bay.
The oldest one and I are just about to finish up a wooden sailboat model. Between carving, cutting, gluing, painting, making sails, and rigging, it has taken us a while to make this boat. When we are done, we’ll be taking it down to the fishing pond to see what kind of boat builders we are.
Needless to say, Cathy and I were exhausted by the time the boys left. But I wouldn’t trade the time spent with the grandkids for anything in the world.
In City news this week, you may have noticed that the City crews are starting to come out of their winter maintenance routines. The street sweeper is making the rounds again. Between all the street sanding for snow, the fall leaves that are still falling, and the storm we had last Friday, there is plenty of work for the street sweeper to do!
Also, the restrooms in the parks will be opened up sometime this week to allow greater access to the parks.
Speaking of parks, Ken Anderson in the Recreation Department has been working to get the soccer fields ready. He has asked me to remind you that if you take your pets to the park, please show courtesy to other park goers by picking up after your pets. The City provides little bags for this purpose at different points around the facilities. Please help us make sure we have not wasted taxpayer dollars on these bags by using them. We would not want to think we had spent your money for nothing.
While on this subject, I have noticed when that animals are also not always picked up after on and sidewalks and lawns. Placing bag dispensers around town is a little less practical than putting them in the park. However, the same courtesy should apply whether in the park or around town. It only takes a moment and collectively makes a huge difference in encouraging others to get out and enjoy Weiser.
While we are on the subject of walking, I thought I would give an update on the sidewalk grant we received last June. At this point it appears the project will be started and completed this summer. For those who may not remember, the sidewalk will go from the high school, down Indianhead to the golf course, then turn and go down State Street and connect with pavement at the Christian Church, which would then connect the sidewalk with downtown. Also, on State Street, the sidewalk will turn at Howard and connect with Memorial Park.
After this project is completed, we will work on sidewalk funding to connect the high school to the W. 9th Street sidewalk. This connection would then complete a loop with downtown, City Park, Memorial Park, the High School, W. 9th Street, and back to downtown. What more could a walker ask for!
Well, that’s it for this week. Hopefully, by this summer, and with people’s help, Weiser will be a better place to take a stroll, which will make it an even better place to live, work, and play!
