Well, Spring finally arrived in a burst of warmth. My tulips are finally blooming. Now I’m just hoping that I can stay up with the yard work and projects I’ve been wanting to do. Please wish me luck!
On Saturday, the Library was treated to a “Space Shuttle Mission” lead by none other than Barbara Morgan, the first Teacher in Space. Barbara gave a great presentation with her experience and insight into the space program, the Space Shuttle, and working to construct the International Space Station. There were more than 140 people of all ages packed into the Library to listen to this amazing program. Ms. Morgan made it interesting for everyone, from preschoolers through great-grandparents. Thank You, Ms. Morgan for the presentation and your service through NASA. Also, Thank You, Timbra Long bringing her to our library!
This last Sunday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the Church of the Redeemer hosted a Hymn Singing service lead by Rev. Blake Coates and Rev. Jim Hardenbrook featuring Iran Trinkel on St. Luke’s pipe-organ and my better half Cathy on the piano. It was a very enjoyable service and will probably become a regular event.
After the music and singing, there were refreshments served in the Episcopal Church fellowship hall. One gentleman came up to me afterwards and told me how much he appreciated the City crew for coming around and cleaning up the alley next to the Church and how tidy they left the premises. My response was that I regretted hearing this. I have made a policy for myself that whenever I get a compliment about one of the various crews or employees, I personally buy donuts for that part of the team. So, Monday morning I had to take time out of my busy schedule to take donuts to the Street Department for doing a good job! Darn!
A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure and privilege to visit Ms. Courtney Thompson’s computer science class to briefly talk about my role as Mayor. I was also interviewed by one of her students, Alexis Riley, who was writing an article for the school newspaper. Ms. Riley did an excellent job asking thoughtful and insightful questions for her article. If I remember correctly, Ms. Riley would like to seek a career in politics. Students like Alexis give me hope for the future and are a great reason to support our local schools even if no children of our own are attending. We have great kids in Weiser!
In City news this week, Ken Anderson, the Recreation Department Director, is still looking for a few lifeguards for this summer’s swimming season. In April’s City Council Meeting the Council approved a fee increase for using the pool. The sole reason for this increase was to raise the starting wages for lifeguards from $7.75 per hour to $10.00 per hour. Non-starting wages were also raised accordingly. So, if you or some young person you know would like a summer job that allows you learn essential life- saving skills, responsibility, and team skills, all while allowing you to enjoy the sun and water, please contact Ken or Jhonna at the Recreation Department no later than Friday May 5th by 5:00 p.m. I doubt you will regret it!
In other news, the City crew continues to work on cleaning up alleys. They are working their way from west to east. If they have been through your alley this spring, they will probably not be back until fall. The weather since last fall has prevented them from making much progress until now. With the normal warm weather seasonal work coming into full swing a second pass through this spring is just not possible without letting other essential work go.
Well, that’s it for this week! I hope you are getting the opportunity to get out and enjoy this great spring weather. Weiser really is a great place to live, work, and play!
